DIPLOMA IN HIV MANAGEMENT EXAM

The Diploma of HIV Management, provided by the College of Family Medicine under the CMSA, is offered biannually and is not affiliated with any particular university or training program. It emphasizes understanding and expertise in managing HIV patients across various healthcare settings such as primary care, community health centers, general practice, and district hospitals.

DIP HIV MAN EXAM

The examination consists of 2 parts:

  • Paper 1: Case based MCQs – 100 marks
  • Paper 2: Data Interpretation MCQs: Includes media such as X-rays, photographs, charts, results etc. – 60 marks

Both papers are a combination of Single best answer MCQ and Extended Matching MCQs. The curriculum based on 27 Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA’s).

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 6 months supervised training at a teaching or CMSA-approved hospital OR
  • 6 months in an HIV Clinic PLUS
  • minimum of 40 hours accredited CPD activities related to HIV medicine.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE EXAM

The FCEM(SA) examination comprises Part I and Part II: Part II must be passed within six years of passing Part I, failing which Part I will have to be repeated.
Part I – Basic Sciences.
Part II – The theory and practise of emergency medicine.

FCEM PART 2 EXAM

The examination consists of 8 components:

  • 3 written
  • 5 oral / practical component

The Written Components:

  • 2 written (consisting of 6 questions each, written over three hours) and
  • 1 MCQ (multiple choice paper) – 100 questions over two hours.

The Examination is designed to cover the principles and practice of emergency medicine, including investigations, diagnosis, treatment and disposal.

The Oral/Practical Components:

  • 15 OSPE stations (where a range of skills will be examined – including problem solving, clinical judgment, interpretation of investigations,
    practical procedures and cost-effective management issues),
  • 2 short clinical cases
  • 2 emergency simulations (where candidates will be expected to be able to elucidate and demonstrate relevant clinical signs, special investigations and procedures, and to synthesise and interpret their findings),
  • 2 x 30 minute oral examinations with different sets of examiners.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 36 months in a numbered registrar training post.
  • Critical Performance Portfolio.

FC PSYCH EXAM OVERVIEW

The FC PSYCH (Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa) comprises Part I and Part II.

Part II must be passed within six years of passing Part I and within 36 months of completing registrar training time (defined as 48 months).

FC PSYCH PART 2 EXAM:

The Part 2 examination consists of:

1.WRITTEN (30%):

  • 2 x written papers, 3 hours each
  • Content will cover the entire content blueprint
  • The 2 papers will be in short answer format and includes 75-100 single best answers (SBAs). There may be additional multiple choice questions (MCQs), extended matching questions (EMQs) and very short answer questions

2.CLINICAL:

  • Part A: Clinical Long Case 30%
  • Part B: OSCE 40%

Each paper must be individually passed and candidates will need to write both papers in one examination sitting and pass both papers. No carry-over will be possible. The examination will be administered electronically on the Speedwell System for which computer literacy is essential.

REQUIREMENTS:

For admission to Part II the candidate must present evidence of:
– Having passed the Part I examination, or Part I of an accredited MMed (Psychiatry) degree within the previous 6 years
– Having not less than 3 years satisfactory fulltime experience as the holder of a clinical appointment or registrar post acceptable to the CMSA Senate
– Having completed a minimum of 33 of the 48 months of training prior to the examination date

FCD EXAM OVERVIEW

The FC PSYCH (Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa) comprises Part I and Part II.

Part II must be passed within six years of passing Part I and within 36 months of completing registrar training time (defined as 48 months).

FC PSYCH PART I EXAM:

The Part I examination is a written examination consisting of:

  • 2 x written papers, 3 hours each
  • Paper 1: Clinical Neurosciences (Neuro-anatomy and Psychopharmacology – 50 questions, Neurophysiology and Genetics – 50 questions)
  • Paper 2: Introduction to Psychiatry – 50 questions and Psychology/Behavioural Sciences – 50 questions
  • The 2 papers will be in short answer format and may include single best answers (SBAs), multiple choice questions (MCQs), extended matching questions (EMQs) and very short answer questions

FCD EXAM OVERVIEW

The FCD (Fellowship of the College of Dentistry of South Africa) has 3 specialty examinations including:

  • Oral Medicine and Periodontics: FCD(SA) OMP
  • Orthodontics: FCD(SA) Orthod
  • Prosthodontics: FCD(SA)

FCD PART I EXAM:

This is standardised across the 3 specialties and includes:

  • 3 x written papers, 3 hours each
  • 1. Anatomy, Embryology, Histology and Oral Biology
  • 2. Physiology
  • 3. Principles of Pathology including Microbiology
  • MCQ’s and short questions

If a candidate is unsuccessful in either one of the Part I subjects, credit will be given for the passed subject(s) (minimum of 50%), and he/she will be able to re-write the failed subject(s). This exemption is only valid for two examination periods. If the candidate is again unsuccessful with one or two of these subjects, the entire examination will have to be taken at the next attempt, with only one (1) extra attempt.

REQUIREMENTS:

The candidate must be in possession of a qualification which entitles the holder thereof to register as a dentist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa

The CMSA Senate, through its Examinations and Credentials Committee, will review all applications for admission to the examination and may also review the ethical and professional standing of candidates

FCOG PART 1 EXAM:

Two written papers (no oral examination) as follows:

Part IA: Basic Sciences (3 hours)

  • 3 hour paper with 4 questions.
  • Essay Questions (questions 1-3) = total of 75 marks (25% of total mark)
  • MCQ (question 4) = 90 single-best-answer multiple choice questions which will total 225 marks (75% of total mark)

Part IB: Applied Science, Natural History, Aetiology, Statistics, Bioethics (3 hours)

  • 3 hour paper with 4 questions.
  • Essay Questions (questions 1-3) = total of 75 marks (25% of total mark)
  • MCQ (question 4) = 90 single-best-answer multiple choice questions which will total 225 marks (75% of total mark)

NOTE: Part IA and Part IB may be attempted together at the same examination sitting or on separate occasions, and in any sequence. Credit for one successful section does not require success in the other.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • For admission to Part I of the examination, the candidate must hold a post-internship qualification to practise medicine which is registered or registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa
  • The old Part I is only valid for a period of six (6) years.

REQUIREMENTS:

Part I: No requirements.

Part II: Completed a minimum of 30 months of full-time training in an approved paediatric registrar post with an HPCSA registrar number at the time of writing the examination OR has satisfactorily completed 48 months of training even if they no longer have an HPCSA training number.
